Peter Paul Rubens painted the Adoration of the Magi (Matthew 2:1ff) more often than any other episode from the life of Christ. [1]

The Adoration of the Magi is one of the most important works within the Rubens collection in the Museo del Prado, not only because it is the largest but also because of its historical and technical importance.

The subject of the Adoration of the Magi was meaningful to the deeply pious Rubens, who addressed the theme at least twelve times in painting, but even more so to his close friend Moretus, who felt a strong personal connection to the regal visitors.

Paintings depicting the “three wise men” were common in churches and chapels (Rubens painted lots of versions). It was a natural picture to have in a chapel, because the attitude of the wise men to Jesus was an example of the worshipping attitude which everyone should have towards Jesus.
