Howard Pyle (March 5, 1853 – November 9, 1911) was an American illustrator, painter, and author, primarily of books for young people. He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware, and he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy.

Oct 18, 2010 · When 23-year-old Howard Pyle began his career, he eked out a living by writing fables, drawing on his already vast knowledge of the genre. “I try to make them as witty as I can,” he explained, “and at the same time indoctrinate a small lesson with them. I strive to hold the lesson in view and throw in the wit as an accessory.

During his prolific career, he produced 3,300 illustrations, many for his own articles and books. He taught at Drexel Institute and trained many important illustrators, including Frank Schoonover, Jessie Wilcox Smith and N.C. Wyeth.
