Conservative cable channel Newsmax paid $40 million to settle a 2020 election defamation lawsuit brought by voting systems software provider Smartmatic out of court, a new filing shows. The payment, which was reported Thursday by Reuters,

Newsmax agreed to pay $40 million to settle claims that it defamed the voting machine company Smartmatic. The two companies reached a “confidential” settlement agreement last September, but a regulatory filing spotted by The Independent has revealed how much the conservative media outlet will pay.

A closely watched case involving Newsmax and Smartmatic has been resolved — but a similar case involving Fox News remains.
