Shortstop Anthony Volpe hopes to return to the New York Yankees’ starting lineup for Monday’s series opener against San Diego after missing a 7-5 loss to Tampa Bay Volpe hurt his left shoulder on a dive trying to get to a grounder in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to the Rays.

Volpe, 24, enters Sunday hitting .233/.326/.442 (119 OPS+) with five home runs, 19 runs batted in, and four stolen bases (albeit on seven attempts). His contributions have been worth an estimated 1.5 Wins Above Replacement, according to Baseball Reference's calculations.

The shortstop felt a pop in his shoulder as he dove to his right in the eighth inning of Saturday’s loss to the Rays. He was in quite a bit of pain, but eventually stayed in the game after a lengthy visit with manager Aaron Boone and head athletic trainer Tim Lentych.
