At 11:30 p.m. local time, the lights on the Eiffel Tower were switched off as a symbol of mourning in honor of Pope Francis.

"At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father," the Vatican announced on Monday.

Pope Francis died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, according to the death certificate released by the Vatican.
