The most severe are third-degree burns. Also known as full-thickness burns, these occur when both the epidermis and dermis have been destroyed.

A burn blister is a fluid-filled blister that may form as a result of a burn. It is generally best not to touch the blister at all. More severe burns or blistering will require medical attention.

A boiling water burn, or scald, can cause immediate pain. Treatment includes stopping contact with the water as soon as possible, running the affected area under cold water, and covering the burn.
