Deep in Southeast Asia, Myanmar sits on a geological fault line that makes it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Located along one of the world's most active seismic belts, Myanmar's many fault lines and shifting tectonic plates have long set the stage for major disasters.
At least 144 people have died in Myanmar after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, felt by Thailand and other neighbouring countries.
Even before a powerful 7.7-magnitude quake hit Myanmar, over 3 million people had been displaced, and hundreds of thousands were cut off from vital food and health programmes as a result of a destructive four-year civil war.
