A missing plane crashed overnight in a rural area of Central Florida, officials said. The pilot, the only person aboard the aircraft, is presumed to be dead, said Sheriff Rick Staly. He said it appears the flight hit the ground nearly straight down – and fast.

“A Cessna 208 crashed in a field in southern Flagler County, Florida, around 1:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, February 15. Only the pilot was on board. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide any updates.”

One pilot died after a plane went down and crashed in Flagler County, Fla., according to officials. WESH reports.

NTSB says the next steps include requesting radar data, weather information, maintenance records and the pilot’s medical records.

Two people died Saturday night after a plane crashed in the woods, Covington police said. Officers responded to the Covington Municipal Airport in Newton County at around 11:21 p.m. after they got a call from the FAA about a single engine aircraft that lost all communication after takeoff.
