The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Monday that center Evgeni Malkin has been added to the injured reserve due to a lower-body ailment. In a corresponding roster move, right winger Jesse Puljujarvi has been recalled from the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed forward Evgeni Malkin on injured reserve and recalled forward Jesse Puljujarvi from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Those transactions have not yet been announced by the team but they were reflected on the NHL media Web site Monday afternoon.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had to do more roster shuffling Monday ahead of their game against the San Jose Sharks. The starting point for the moves is not good news as the team placed Evgeni Malkin on injured reserve.

On Monday, it was announced by the Pittsburgh Penguins that second-line center Evgeni Malkin was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury that will keep him out week-to-week. In a corresponding move, the Penguins decided to recall winger Jesse Puljujarvi, who has three goals and nine points in 25 games with the NHL club this season.

Malkin, now in his 19th NHL season, has recorded nine goals and 25 assists in 47 games this year. Career-wise, the Russian has won three Stanley Cup titles with the Penguins and an Art Ross Trophy, recently hitting the 500-goal plateau (something only 48 players have done) in Pittsburgh.

With forward Evgeni Malkin sidelined due to an undisclosed injury, the Pittsburgh Penguins fell to the San Jose Sharks, 2-1, at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. on Monday. Earlier in the day, the team placed Malkin on injured reserve.

Malkin (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Monday. Malkin exited Saturday's game against Seattle due to a lower-body injury, and he'll be forced to miss multiple games due to the issue. The extent of the 38-year-old's injury isn't yet clear,
