One of the cats infected with the bird flu was an 8-month-old kitten on the Upper West Side that consumed raw chicken from Savage Cat, a company that makes raw pet food. A veterinarian said the kitten had to be euthanized.

The recall is the latest in recent months tied to products potentially contaminated with the virus that has sickened and killed cats in several states, after racing through poultry and dairy cattle in the U.S. and causing illnesses in at least 70 people.

A San Diego County pet food company that specializes in raw food for cats is recalling its product because of the potential it may contain H5N1, also known as bird flu. Savage Pet of El Cajon is recalling 66 Large Chicken Boxes (84 ounces) and 74 Small Chicken Boxes (21 ounces) with the lot code/best by date of 11152026.
