Before passing almost directly over the Houston region on July 8, when it caused widespread power outages and contributed to dozens of deaths, Hurricane Beryl devastated multiple Caribbean islands and was the earliest Category 5 storm on record in the Atlantic basin.

The World Meteorological Organization has added four names to the list never to be used again to describe a tropical storm. Beryl, Helene, Milton and John did so much damage that they will be distinct forever.

Beryl, Helene, and Milton will be replaced by the names Brianna, Holly, and Miguel when the list returns in 2030. The retired names join a list of nearly 100 retired storm names that have been retired over the last few decades, such as Andrew, Katrina and Sandy.
