San Diego is exploring turning another privately owned building into a long-term homeless shelter after a controversial plan to use an empty warehouse near the airport finally fell through last week.

San Diego City Council leaders voted to explore three new homeless shelter options during a meeting Monday. This comes after Mayor Todd Gloria pulled the plug on the proposed mega homeless shelter at Kettner and Vine in Midtown last week.

San Diego officials plan to recommend three alternatives to expand homeless shelter capacity, as the city braces for a budget crisis.

Following months of discussions with the property owner and the City Council, Mayor Todd Gloria Friday announced the proposed homeless shelter in Middletown was no longer realistic.

On Monday, the City Council voted to direct staff to find out more about making “a long-term shelter at a private property on Second Avenue.”
