Billy Ray is back in business on The Hunger Games. The Oscar-nominated scribe, who put pen to paper on the blockbuster that started it all back in 2012, has been tapped to write the screenplay for the next installment of franchise by adapting Suzanne Collins' newest bestseller The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The odds were only kinda, sorta in the favor of CinemaCon attendees on Tuesday morning as Lionsgate unveiled a new logo for "The Hunger Games" prequel "Sunrise on the Reaping" to the annual trade show for movie theater owners but stopped short of offering any major details - such as cast or footage - about the new film.

Oscar nominated screenwriter Billy Ray is returning to The Hunger Games franchise and will adapt Suzanne Collins’ upcoming prequel novel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping for Lionsgate. As previously announced,

Lionsgate announced it would be producing a film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' "Sunrise on the Reaping" before the book was even released.

Sunrise on the Reaping hit bookshelves in March 2025, but fans won't have to wait long to see the latest Hunger Games prequel get the movie treatment. Lionsgate ordered the movie The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping at the same time author Suzanne Collins announced the book about Haymitch Abernathy was on the way.

Suzanne Collins' Sunrise On The Reaping novel has only been out in the world for (exactly) two weeks, but since the movie and book were announced at the same time over summer, the production has a head start.
