We went in the summer as well and aimed for afternoon. I don't think active is the issue, the way the zoo is designed you walk up a hill and view some of the big cats in the cages, and then there are more in various different kinds of natural pens you view from the walkway that winds through the entire zoo. It's really worth several hours.
My boyfriend doesn't want to hold the animals but I do. Can he get a regular ticket and still be with me while I hold the animals? To take pictures and such

Yes. He can stand behind the half wall and watch you and take pics. They won’t let him inside the area, but he won’t be more than 6 feet from you.
