My husband and I would like to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing but felt intimidated by the terrain. We are casual hikers, have done several hikes in Norway, Torres del Paine and hiked to the base camp of Mt Everest. We are in our 70s, in good health but slow hikers. Hi there I did the tongariro crossing in April and im not a hiker at all plus one of my knees is pretty weak i had people passing me the whole time i took it at my own pass (snails) but I did it once you get pass the devils staircase the rest was pretty easy, there are vans buses at both ends of the mountain and the drivers give you a phone number for any emergency hope this helps
what happen if you park more than 4 hour at mangatepopo car park where there is 4 hours parking restriction?

Much easier to book a shuttle, that way you have a ride back to hotel if you make the crossing or if you have to turn back. Heard they were giving large fines so shuttle would be much cheaper.

If you were in the mood to drive to 30ish kms to nearest town there is an excellent white water rafting company called Rafting New Zealand based in Turangi and they have 8.30am rafting trips that tale about 3 hours. It's a grade 3 level river, so really gentle rapids great for first-timers. If you were looking for something a little more low key, I also found a really good public thermal pool (the Tokaanu Thermal Pools) - there was a walk through natural hot springs there too. Both of these options would require about a 30min drive - if you wanted to stay in the area, there is a spa facility, cafe & golf course at the Chateau Tongariro Hotel, you could always give them a call and see if you could get a day pass.
I'm planning on coming on 9/4 and just doing the Mangatepopo Valley to Soda Springs trail, would we need any snow gear? Also, would the roads up to the car park require snow chains during that time? Would you recommend doing a shuttle service?
